Chapter One: The Message in the Reeds

Pip finds a paper boat caught in the reeds with a note inside that reads only Come quickly. She has never left home, but the river is already pulling the boat loose.

About the show

Pip is a field mouse who has never left the reed bed at the bottom of the garden. Then a paper boat drifts past with a message folded inside, and Pip, being Pip, climbs aboard. This is one long adventure told in order, a chapter every Monday, so children aged four to eight can follow Pip downstream week by week, past the heron's pool, the old mill, the lock keeper's cat and the sea itself. Each chapter is 15 to 20 minutes, narrated by Niamh Kearney with gentle music, a recap of last week at the start and a soft cliffhanger at the end that never frightens. The show is made for bedtime and for long car rides, and it rewards listening in order. Grown-ups will find Pip's river is also a very good excuse to talk about courage, homesickness and asking for help.
