Chapter two

Last week Pip let go of the reeds. This week the river slows, widens and goes very quiet, and that is where herons like to stand. Pip has heard stories about herons. The heron has heard nothing at all about mice in boats.

  • Recap: 90 seconds at the start for anyone who missed chapter one
  • Who we meet: Grey Ambrose the heron, who speaks very slowly
  • What happens: a standoff, a riddle, an unexpected gift of a feather
  • Where we end: the boat moves again, faster now, towards a sound like thunder
  • Running time 18 minutes

Chapter three is called The Old Mill. Hold on tight.

Transcript
Welcome back to the river. I am Niamh, this is Pip and the Paper Boat, and this is chapter two. If you missed chapter one, do not worry, I will remind you. Pip is a field mouse. Pip found a paper boat with a note inside that said Come quickly. And Pip, who had never been anywhere, climbed in and let go. That was last Monday. Tonight the river has gone slow and wide and very, very quiet. The water is dark like tea. And standing in the middle of it, on one long leg, as still as a fence post, is a heron. Herons eat fish. Do herons eat mice? Pip does not know. Neither do I, yet. Settle down, breathe slowly, and let us drift into the heron's pool together. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts, and the boat is already moving.
