Chapter one

We meet Pip, a field mouse who lives in a teacup under the reeds at the bottom of a garden in County Galway. Nothing has ever happened to Pip, and she is mostly fine with that. Then a paper boat bumps against her doorstep.

  • Who we meet: Pip, her sensible neighbour Old Dunnock, and a voice from downstream
  • What happens: a note, a decision, a very wobbly launch
  • Where we end: the boat slips free and the garden disappears behind her
  • Words to talk about: brave, curious, homesick
  • Running time 17 minutes

Chapter two arrives next Monday. Pip will be fine. Probably.

Transcript
Hello, and welcome to the very first chapter of Pip and the Paper Boat. My name is Niamh, and I am going to be your storyteller every Monday from now on, for as long as the river runs. Our story starts at the bottom of a garden in Galway, where the grass turns into reeds and the reeds turn into water. In those reeds, inside an old teacup, lives a field mouse called Pip. Pip has never been anywhere. She has never wanted to. And then, this morning, something bumps against her doorstep. It is a boat, folded from a page of newspaper, and inside it is a note that says just two words. Come quickly. Pull your blanket close, because Pip is about to make a very big decision. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts, and chapter one begins now.

Chapter Two: The Heron's Pool
