Tonight after bedtime

A letter from Abuja opens the show. Ngozi now earns twice what her husband Emeka does, and nothing was wrong until his mother asked who pays the rent. Folake has thoughts. Tunde has a clinic full of this.

  • The three money conversations every couple needs, and the one most skip
  • What Tunde tells men who feel smaller when their wives rise
  • Folake on being the higher earner in her own marriage, and the year it got tense
  • Handling a parent who turns income into a scorecard
  • A practical script for the next Sunday lunch with his mother

Next week: the long flat months when you feel more like flatmates than a couple.

Transcript
Good evening, and welcome to Same Bed, Different Blankets. I am Tunde, that is my wife Folake on the other sofa, the children are finally asleep, and we have about forty minutes before one of them wakes up. This is a show about marriage, the real one, not the one in the wedding photos. Tonight we have a letter from Abuja. Ngozi was promoted in March. She now earns about twice what her husband Emeka earns. Emeka says he is proud, and I believe him. Then his mother came to visit, and at Sunday lunch she asked, in front of everyone, who pays the rent in this house. Now nobody is talking. Folake has been the higher earner in our house for six years, so she will go first, and I will try to survive it. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

Flatmates With a Marriage Certificate

The long flat stretch where you share a bed, a bank account and a school run but not much else. Tunde and Folake talk about their own dry year and how they came back.
