The practical bit nobody explains

After the response to Arif's episode, dozens of listeners asked the same thing: how do I actually find someone, and how do I pay for it. Daniyal answers as plainly as he can, drawing on running a low-cost clinic himself.

  • NHS routes, waiting lists and what to do while you wait
  • Sliding scale fees and how to ask for one without embarrassment
  • Training clinics, charities and community organisations that charge little or nothing
  • What to write in a first email to a therapist
  • Why the first therapist you try does not have to be the one you keep

Links to the directories Daniyal mentions are in the show notes.

This is Speaking Terms and I am Daniyal Qureshi. After the last episode with Arif, my inbox filled up, and almost every message asked a version of the same question. Okay, I am ready, but how do I find someone, and how on earth do I pay for it. So today it is just me, and I am going to be very practical. I run a low-cost clinic, I know how the pricing works from the inside, and I am going to tell you where the cheaper doors are, what a sliding scale is, what to write in that first awkward email, and why it is fine to walk away from a therapist who is not right for you. Twenty minutes, no theory. Pen and paper might help. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

Arif stopped bowling at 24

Arif was a promising club cricketer until panic attacks made him walk off mid-over. He talks to Daniyal about the three years he told nobody and the phone call that finally changed things.
