This fortnight

Priya researched loneliness for a living and then moved to Leeds for a job and discovered she had no one to text. This episode is what she did next: the running club, the book group she hated, the neighbour she eventually knocked on.

  • Why making friends after 35 feels like dating but with less permission
  • The three-invite rule and why most people stop at one
  • Guest Marcus Oyelaran, who moved to Glasgow at 44 and joined a choir he cannot sing in
  • The first friend who stuck, and how long it actually took
  • A small homework task for anyone new in town

Next time: when your best friend has a baby and quietly disappears.

Transcript
Hello, I am Priya Hallworth, and this is The Group Chat Went Quiet, a show about friendship for grown adults who thought this part would be sorted by now. Here is the embarrassing bit. I studied loneliness for six years. I wrote reports about it. Then I took a job in Leeds, moved into a flat near the canal, unpacked my boxes, and realised on the Saturday night that there was not one person in this city I could text. Not one. I was 38. So this first episode is about what I did next, including a running club I was terrible at and a neighbour I stared at for three weeks before knocking. Later, Marcus joins me, who did all of this in Glasgow at 44 and has a choir to show for it. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

She Had a Baby and I Lost Her

When a close friend becomes a parent, the friendship often goes quiet from both sides. Priya and guest Hannah, who has a toddler, tell both halves of the same story honestly.
