This fortnight

Priya's friend of fifteen years had a baby in 2024, and the messages went from daily to monthly to nothing. Nobody was angry. Everybody was tired. Both sides tonight: Priya, who felt dropped, and Hannah, a listener with a toddler, on what it looks like from under the pram.

  • Why new parents stop replying, and why it is rarely about you
  • The invites that actually work for a parent of a one year old
  • Priya's live call segment: she rings her friend Shireen, with permission, after eight months
  • Hannah on the friend who kept turning up with coffee and no agenda
  • What to say when you want someone back

Next time: the friend you outgrew, and whether to say so.

Transcript
Hi, Priya here, and this is The Group Chat Went Quiet. Today is a hard one for me, so I am going to be honest from the start. My friend Shireen and I were close for fifteen years. Holidays, breakups, her wedding, my divorce, all of it. In 2024 she had a baby boy. And then, slowly, nothing. Daily messages became weekly, then a thumbs up, then a long gap I stopped counting. Nobody fell out. Everybody was just tired. So today I have Hannah, a listener with a toddler, who is going to tell me what my messages probably looked like from her side of the pram. And then, with her permission, I am going to phone Shireen on this show for the first time in eight months. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Wish me luck.

I Moved to Leeds at 38 and Knew Nobody

Priya tells the story of arriving in a new city with no friends at 38 and the slightly humiliating things she did about it. Guest Marcus did the same in Glasgow at 44.
