Chapter One

Auctioneer Hattie Crane arrives at Marsh House on a wet Monday to begin the inventory of the late Edmund Marsh's estate. The solicitor is brisk, the housekeeper is silent, and the first item on her list, a mahogany longcase clock in the hall, stopped at twenty past four on a date nobody will name.

  • Hattie's arrival and the solicitor's first inconsistency
  • Lot 1: the clock and what is scratched inside its case
  • The housekeeper, Mrs Dunn, and the tea she does not drink
  • The village shop and the second death

Chapter Two follows directly. New listeners should begin here.

Transcript
Good evening, and welcome to The Marsh House Inventory. My name is Oliver Featherstone, I wrote this story and I will be reading it, and this is chapter one, which is the right place to start. Our narrator is Hattie Crane, an auctioneer from a small firm in Norwich, sent to catalogue the contents of a damp house on the Norfolk coast after its owner died without a will. She expects furniture, mould and a week of bad tea. She gets all three. But the first item on her list, a longcase clock in the hall, has been stopped at twenty past four, and when she asks the housekeeper why, the kettle goes on and nothing is said. Listen carefully to the dates. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Chapter one.

Chapter Two: Lot 14, A Pair of Riding Boots

A pair of riding boots in the boot room is too small for Edmund Marsh and too new for the house. Hattie traces the maker's mark and the solicitor changes a date for the second time.
