Chapter Two

In the boot room Hattie finds a pair of riding boots, well made, barely worn, and two sizes too small for the late Edmund Marsh. The maker's mark leads her to a saddler in Holt who remembers the customer, and the solicitor, when pressed, revises the date of Edmund's last visit to the house for the second time.

  • Lot 14: the boots, the mark and the saddler's ledger
  • Mrs Dunn finally sits down
  • The solicitor's second revised date
  • A letter found inside the left boot
  • Closing: Hattie restarts the clock

Continues directly from Chapter One.

Transcript
Good evening, this is The Marsh House Inventory and I am Oliver Featherstone. Chapter two. If you have not heard the first, go back, because the dates matter and they are already being changed. When we left Hattie Crane she had catalogued one stopped clock, drunk one bad cup of tea and heard, in the village shop, of a second death that no one wrote down. Tonight she opens the boot room and finds a pair of riding boots that are too small for the dead man and too new for the house. The maker's mark takes her to a saddler in Holt. The solicitor revises a date. And inside the left boot there is a letter. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Chapter two, Lot 14.
